How do colleges know if you've downloaded illegally off their connection? Do they monitor everything you do on your computer? So information as to what websites you have visited to download music is recorded too?

Last year, I downloaded a few songs using LimeWire while I was in my dorm. I didn't think too much of it since I had been downloading music for quite a while. Anyway, a friend of my roommate, actually got in trouble. Around this time, there was a rumor going around that music companies where targeting students at certain universities to make a point. So sure enough this guy actually ended up getting sued, and had to settle for like $2,000. I heard that a few other people got sued as well.

While I was talking to this person, I actually found out that the music company had sued him for 'hosting' and sharing the files, it hadn't necessarily been for downloading them. I think I got lucky since I disabled the 'shared folders' on my computer. Anyway, I haven't heard anything since then.

I would imagine that if they wanted to they could certainly monitor your activities or set up some type of filter to zoom in on P2P networks. I guess it depends on your university and how seriously they take intellectual property rights and file sharing.

If it's YOUR computer, the only way to monitor it would be to install certain software on your computer. The only thing they can see is how much bandwith you use.
