I don't think it is less thankful but saying "thank you" sounds a little more respectful or polite. I still think the meaning is the same, though.

It's not less Thankful, but in some cases I do think it has less meaning.

I say thanks to small things, like when people hand me an object I want.

I say thank you when someone does a huge favor for me.

I can never resist not saying "thank you" to anyone. I don't usually get a "you're welcome" but as long as I walk out of that place knowing I said thank you, I would feel proud.

Thank you for the two points! =)

They both have the same meaning. I don't see why it would be any less polite.

It's all in the way it's said isn't it
Body language, tone of voice and all that other stuff makes the real difference - no the words used

Depending on how it's said, it sounds more like you're trying to force yourself to be polite, rather than actually being thankful.

No! and even worse when Australians shorten the word to "ta" god forbid what visitors think!
Acknowledgement by way of thanks, thank-you or "ta" show appreciation - it's all good!

Very interesting question! And yes, I do think that saying "thanks" is less thankful than saying "thank you!"

"Thank you" sounds more sincere and....polite than "thanks." I thought I was the only one!
