The original Tiptronic (G64) was first offered in 1989 - though only on the 964 Carrera 4. In 1990 it was offered on all new Carrera models, and would make it's way across the rest of the model line soon thereafter.
The earlier Sportomatic was offered on some Porsche models from 1968 until 1979 (though it is generally much rarer than the Tiptronic). The 924/944/928 models were all offered with Automatic tranmissions while they were available.

The current tiptronic system was introduced with the 993 version in about 1989-1990, but back in the 70s, they made a Sportmatic gearbox, which had a conventional 4-on-the-floor shift, but no clutch pedal.
If I was buying a 911, I'd have the manual everytime though!

i discover it no longer likely that a Tiptronic trans can equivalent or exceed the value of the shifts able in a handbook (fantastically interior the palms of experienced testers). keep in mind, we are speaking some classic computerized right here, no longer a sequential handbook gearbox. that's greater in all probability that through fact the torque converter acts as a torque-multiplying gadget, greater potential is making it to thepersistent wheels. through fact of this that drag racers in heavy muscle vehicles just about universally use automatics, through fact the torque multiplication helps get the automobile off of the line greater at as quickly as. keep in mind, that's basically an knowledgeable guess, and additionally, once you're speaking approximately severe-powered vehicles, the circumstances on the try venue, the subject of the automobile (greener vehicles with very few miles, make much less potential) besides through fact the potential of the driving force can impression the try consequences by potential of a few tenths or so, that's a great distinction while comparing sub-4 2d 0-to-sixty situations.
