Southbound Dog
Two boys from Europe - yeah, they must be tourists
It’s too warm to wear a cardigan
Thin man with a beard – that’s Marlboro red
On his hat - not Maryland or Michigan
I’m just thinkin’
Takin’ one day at a time
Pocketful of emptiness, quarters and dimes
And the Southbound Dog keeps on rollin’
And the Southbound Dog just keeps rollin’ on
Sweet young girl holding fashion magazines
Somehow makes you feel she needs protection
She must have secrets on the inside of her eyelids
She’s been readin’ them all morning – reading them all morning
I’m just thinkin’
Takin’ each day as they come
With a bag of simple clothes on a road marked US 1
And the Southbound Dog keeps on rollin’
And the Southbound Dog just keeps rollin’ on
Nine passengers and the driver
Don’t know the life I’ve left behind
We’ll soon run out of road, and have to drop the load
The clothes, the change, and you still on my mind

I’m just thinkin’
But I can’t get nothin’ done
As fears and dreams collide on the ride down Highway 1
And the Southbound Dog keeps on rollin’
And the Southbound Dog just keeps rollin’ on
