I am from Biloxi, MS (US) and were washed away by Hurricane Katrina. Almost everything is still bare, people are trying really hard to make a come back, but it is so difficult when you are older, you have NEVER had a problem with money or credit, you lived in a very nice house, that was washed away in 8 hours and now you are in a Mobile Home struggling to pay the bills.
The credit card companies were kind enough to delay payment for 2 years, however the continued to compound interest. We are barley making it and are embarassed b/c we might have to file bankruptcy. Money was set aside from the Federal Government (FEMA) and given to the state to be distrubuted by (MEMA). however the Hurricane hit Aug 29,2005 and we still have not seen the grants. If you apply for food stamps or help with food for your children or any other kind of assistance, and you speak with any level of intellegence, they think you should be at work..........however in addition to loosing everything, I have a brain injury and broken bones in my neck and can not work. If it were not for the generosity of those living by me and in my church, I would have no food to feed my son, I would not have stairs to get out of the mobile home, and I have just worked something out with a local contractor to put skirting on the trailor and he is only making 100.00 in labor. He is basically just charging me for materials.
I am so glad that I live here, where the people are kind and generous b/c if I lived somewhere else, I am not certian, that so many people that I DON"T even really know have dropped all kinds of stuff at my doorstep.
The Government here looks down on us and has done literally nothing to help, but the people are so generous, on to another that that is the only reason we are kind of making it.
Hope that this helps

I and my wife worked for over 47 years. Our saving went for what we had to give us a future but, unfortunately a sever heart attack and illness took it all. We live on social security. We fall behind $167.00 every month.
Were still able to give to the poor at church, the little we have. The hospital has forgiven us our medical bills, thank God. We thank God we can have that pound of hamburger to eat and stretch for three days.

The government just now, after thirteen years, after we lost everything, gave us our low income credit for our prescriptions for heart meds that I have to have. Thank you bush.

They can spend 129 billion for the war, to what purpose, but can't help the American public, the seniors of the country.

You want concrete answers, ask any American senior that has retired what he thinks of the American system.

ireland: the "poor" are treated very well sometimes even better than people who are just above drowning level. drug addicts and alcoholics can be given free accomadation all they have to do is sign on welfare where as somebody like myself who has to get out of bed at 6 am on a freezing morning and travel across town by foot to do a 12 hour shift working his rump off for a pittance just to keep a roof over his head is unable to get any housing benefits or help because he made the mistake of actually having a job!. people on low income jobs without kids are treated like crap and sometimes more worse off than people without jobs. i've seen kids whose parents have never worked a day in their lives with mini bikes and quads. talk about disparity, i'm desperate!
