You know, I used to be a big movie freak.. But lately, I've come to wonder what is the point of movies? Nowadays everything is so played out that I have to wonder why people even bother.

If done right, a movie can encourage, uplift, scold, persuade ...

Some random examples follow, regardless of whether a person likes the movie or not:

"Hook" -- encourages grown-ups to remember that maturity does not always mean acting grown up.

"Spider-Man" -- With great power comes great responsibility.

"Remember the Titans" -- encourages friendship and brotherhood that overlooks skin color.

"Galaxy Quest" -- encourages humility, scolds arrogance.

And these are some of the more trivial ones. Some movies really delve into the human experience and remind us to look at ourselves and improve our lives and the society around us.

But does EVERY movie do this? No. There are some movies that are, frankly, a total and complete waste of time -- perhaps even too many movies like this. I think of "Ace Ventura" and "Austin Powers" which, from what I can tell, have no more purpose than to distract people for an hour and a half.

I think the ideal movie is one that presents an uplifting message of encouragement in an entertaining way. Ones I think do this VERY successfully are "Galaxy Quest", "Finding Nemo", "Mary Poppins", "Big Fish", and "Groundhog Day" among others.

Drama and comedy have always played a major role in civilizations. The Greeks called it catharsis. They are an outlet for our emotions, making us laugh and cry and leading us through the full array of emotions. Movies, like stageplays and even television, are important on various levels, most of which others before me have explained.

Think how often people allude to movies. If we had plays instead on a regular basis, we might refer to them. If you think about it, it joins people because some films reach out to a wide audience. Mention a film, and most of the time you will have people begin to speak about it~attacking and defending or sharing the love for it. Sadly, reading has fallen to the wayside; the chances of having read something that others at a gathering have are rather slight. Films and television can open lines of communication.

There IS a point to movies. I'm not sure what you mean by "everything is so played out". Obviously that isn't true since someone out there is always working on some script that might hold surprises for us. That's why each trip to the theater can reveal a new adventure. Those of us who can't get to the theater will be looking forward to those movies we hear about. Or, a movie channel might show us movies we might not have watched otherwise.

Yes, I'm a film buff who has been in love with movies practically since I was born! I'm a third generation film buff.

The great Charle Chaplin put his money and prestige into a movie entitled The Great Dictator(1940). It was meant as a warning to the world about the dangers of Nazi Germany. Now considered among the top ten movies of all time, it didnt prevent World War 2, or the genocide of millions of innocent people.

Well if you're a movie geek don't dismay...Movies are to many more than just entertainment, though that's ultimately what they are...though many movies can carry a valuable message if watched. Some might carry sentimental value it's all what you want to take out of the movie...yes some are played out and re-done over and over...but to many movies can be a source or joy and inspiration, some people watch them to get a fright out of them....various reasons why to keep watching them..you might be a a self title movie geek but keep at it until you can claim the prize when everyone you knows refers to you as one!

okay, i am a huge movie freakazoid. although im sure the main purpose of movies is for the entertainment value, the do many more things. they get our adrenaline pumpin, and can make you cry and laugh and happy and sad. they can inspire you and make you realize dreams do come true. and let you fly over mountain tops and reach the stars. or swim with the sharks. you can be a kid again and wish on a star, or do anything your dreams can imagine. i think movies have a much bigger purpose than entertainment value.

Yes, movies can educate, compel emotion for subjects that many people have little knowledge of. Movies can take you places you have never been and might not have the opportunity to go. To see the beauty of areas of the earth, for example, as a silent observer.

Movies can be VERY educational. You need to try different types of movies. If you have not seen them, you should watch Blood Diamonds, North Country, My Country, Harrison's Flowers, Cider House Rules, Rwanda...........the list goes on. Those types of movies put your life in a whole new perspective. It is hard to see the terrible things that go on in the world; but it will be worth it.
