The only way I can get my kids' bathroom to smell ok is when I spray bleach on the bottom of the toilet where it meets the linoleum. There is no cauking there. The smell comes back in a few days. Will I have to rip up the lino and replace the sub-floor? Thanks for any help. I'm clueless in home maintenance.

Little boys have problems (so do men sometimes) with their aim. So, as tiresome as it gets, please wipe down the toilet bowl on the outside, all the way to the base and floor, with bleach water mix daily. All around the bowl on the outside. Jolly's I know.
Please consult with someone from a place like home depot or another hardware store about the smell/replacing the flooring. You might have to-but definitely caulk around the base of the toilet once it's fixed. Take care.

Actually, bleach is not a very good choice for toilets. I had a conversation once with my biology teacher and she said that using bleach with the toilet would actually make the smell worse. You should use those things that you just have to plug in and there would be a nice scent. If the problem lies at the bottom of the toilet, you should have a plumber have a look at it. There might be a busted pipe or something where the liquids from the toilet leak out on the ground. But yeah, don't use bleach. It's bad.

If you have a Sam's Club near by, you go there and get some OdaBan. It's clean and in a jug usually with a free spray bottle attached to the side. This stuff is VERY GOOD. You give that bathroom a good once over and I bet you will be pleased. Use it in the toilet a time or two you you may use it every time. I know I do.

Vinegar is the main ingredient in many commerical products that remove urine stains/odors. Get a 12 oz spray bottle and mix 2 oz. white vinegar to 10 oz. of water. Spray it down good and clean it well.

Then tell your kids to pee in the toilet, and if they miss they need to clean it up. Have the bottle where they can clean it up. If they are old enough to be using the bathroom unsupervised they are old enough to clean it up when they miss the target.

You can also keep some cheerios in the bathroom. Have them drop one in the toilet and try to sink the cheerio. You'll have them missing a lot less.

The toilet bowl wax could be bad and allowing the flush to come under the toilet.the fix is to take up the toilet and replace the wax seal and make sure the sewer isn't cloged causing a backup. also while the toilet is up you can see if the underlayment needs attention.

Try using cold water only unless the urine is underneath
linoleum. If it is under the linoleum get to that area and use
cold water(gets rid of urine odor) I would replace the floor
with ceramic tile if I were you., Good Luck

If you have boys, they pee all over everything in the bathroom. If girls, they may be peeing on the stool. Check the color of the girls urine, she may have an infection. You could also have problems with the water or your bathroom plumbing. You should be cleaning the bathroom that often anyway.

It's time to scrub the bathroom top to bottom. And you need to teach your boys to aim and clean up after themselves when they miss.

try covering it with bicarb soda sweep/vac, clean, re-place bicarb soda every other day. also leave a bowl of bicarb up higher on a shelf, or toilet cistern or window sill, it will help absorb odours and moisture.
