I am eligible to get a public defender but I am considering hiring a lawyer by borrowing money from a friend because I was arrested inside my house when the police were told they could not come in and I never drove the car, I was arrested because I was drunk and my car was left in the middle of the street by my friend and they came after me.

I have nothing against public defenders, but, any attorney, without a good background in handling DUIs is not going to do the best job possible.

Yes, a public defender works for the County, and is given to you by the court. A public defender also takes any case given to him an does not specialize in DUI cases. It will cost you money, but is your freedom not worth every dollar you will spend?

Since the public defender is for people that can't afford the attorney fee themselves then I would say if you can ask this question then you need to get your own attorney, which is usually a good idea anyway.
