I am in Northern California, and my weather is usually 10-15 degrees warmer than San Francisco.

Certainly easy enough to find out what ZONE you're in. Any decent garden center, and or perhaps a label on the bulb box. I had Black Iris as big as a football in WA state, that bloomed by late April. Obviously After the next frost might be best, even if they don't grow much or bloom in the first season, they need to get established.
