Oh yes it does take practice. I mean you cannot learn how to hammer or ride a bike or tie your shoes or anything without doing it.
Question remains how do you do it. Well you can hit the nail in many ways. I some times do it in a circullar fashion forward away from you rather than toward you. If you angle the hammer head face toward you or away or to the side depending on the angle of the nail you want to hit in, you will hit the nail in the direction that you want.
Now what does all this mean? If you hammer in toward you then you will often bend the nail and sometimes have to hit it into the board and renail.
Oh and yes hold the nail for the first distance so you do not hit it into someones eyes.
Oh and yes keep your eye on the target and place your hand where the thickest part of the hammer is. not necessasarily the end. Some hammers where it bows out in the middle really is the best holding location.
this is a good question

aim & strike.
practice.
Beginners sometimes 'choke up' on the handle until get used to it - - but will take much longer since will have little power delivered to nail head. Using handle with hand farther away from the hammer head, gives more swing power & punch to the nail head for better results.

Give the 10 to Monkey. Placing your thumb on the head of any nail will pretty much guarantee you'll hit it every time, in a swinging arc of the hammer.

I don't believe I chose to answer this question, I don't need the two points.
Hold the nail with your pointer finger and your thumb. then tap the nail to get it started, maybe several time. Then give it three good whacks.
A good carpenter can hold the nail and, give it three good whacks sinking it. It takes practice.

First and foremost, have someone else hold the nail! Then line up your strike and start whacking away! Or you could just tap the nail until it is set. But it is so much funnier to have somebody else hold the nail for you!
