I'm going to start writing a fantasy story involving elves, fairies, sprites, dwarves, trolls and humans......maybe even some vampires....I need lots of good, ethereal, other-worldly names, both male and female.....
My main character and protagonist is going to be a female elf....I'm not sure what other characters I'm going to have at this point, but I just need some names to base them off of.....I really stink at making up names....could anyone help me? Thanks so much!

This might sound odd, but if you are looking for a truly unusual name, you should draw some letters out of a hat. Seriously. I have a friend who did this and the name she came up with was pretty cool. Just write down some letters and then group them together. (Consonants and vowels in their own piles.) Then start picking them out. If you come up with a letter combination you like (for example, if you draw out an S then a C) then you can pick out a vowel. You might be surprised. If nothing else, you can rearrange the letters you picked to form something too. There are so many possibilities when you do it this way. Have fun with it!

Most of those folks, like elves and fairies, etc. come from certain parts of the world. So decide where this takes place and then look for names on the Internet having to do with that country. For example is the Elf from Ireland? Find a good Celtic name for her. Research is important in writing. Rowling did a lot of research before writing Harry Potter. Find out where most Elves are from, where most Vampires are from. Their names will be of that nationality. William would not be a Vampire, but Wilhelm might be, for example.

I bought some used baby name books, and usually flip through them until something stands out.
Have you considered using common names for your characters? Elves, fairies, etc., are always given fanciful names, so an elf named Bob would actually be original.
Don't get stuck on names at the expense of writing your story, though. If you can't find the right one, find one that's close to right and move on. Sometimes it's easy to get stuck on names/titles/place names and stop working on the story.
