The Moon was closer to the Earth yesterday (on average).
The Moon is receeding from the Earth at a rate of 4.3cm/yr.
This figure has been established by laser ranging against reflectors left on the lunar surface by the Apollo astronauts.
Every day, the Moon receeds just a little bit more...

The moon was created when a huge asteriod plummeted into the Earth. A huge chunk of Earth came out, and started to float around us. It came from Earth, and every year moves a little further away.

The Moon does NOT move away a small amount each moment, the eccentricity in its orbit allows it to move closer to us at times even though its ORBIT is expanding and moving away from us.
