Good question, I'm white and I prefer hip hop to almost any other genre, except for the classics (the ones that go way back, talking Dylan, The Beatles, Floyd, Hendrix, so on)
Hiphop is great in a lot of ways, and certainly has done nothing but gain popularity as the days go by. In my opinion, hip-hop is our modern day disco. For people of our generation, it's the perfect music for any club. (could you imagine trying to dance to Jewel or Nickleback?) It's a great type a music to listen to when driving, it gets you pumped and keeps you entertained throughout. It's also a great genre to listen to while under the influence of different substances, be it alcohol or others.
In my opinion, I think hip hop is hated by a majority of people for several different reasons.
1) Many older generations grew up with a totally different sound, and hip-hop is a genre that has to grow on you, so those newly introduced take it as a bunch of useless lyrics over mediocre beats and melodies. (Which don't get me wrong, there are a lot of hip-hop songs that are not quality, but this goes for any genre)
2) I think the "content" of a lot of hip-hop music is taken too seriously and too literally. When people who don't listen to hip-hop listen to some CD's in my car, many generalize it by saying "It's all about murder, drugs, and sex." Once again, while many hip-hop songs ARE about these subjects, they are missing the point and not understanding the roots of the genre. It can also be said that many rock, country, blues, etc. songs are also about murder, drugs, or sex, it doesn't seem to change their opinions.
3) This last one is a little controversial, but I think many people hate rap because they view it as a music for only a particular culture. While I agree that the genre's origins come from hardships and overcoming poverty. (The same can be said for blues) I think the more hip-hop evolves and becomes a multi-cultural genre, the more popular it will become.
To me, hip-hop is musical poetry, and the more depth and meaning rappers put into their music, the more popular it will become. If you can find the great hip-hop songs that have been produced, and listen closely, you can become a fan, even if you are one of those who say "rap is all crap"

Probably because most people classify it as "all sounding the same", when most don't even listen to it enough to even distinguish the difference.
Just a closed minded society that probably have heard 1 rap/hiphop song which they deem as "crap". Sure there is crap rap and hiphop, but there's sh*t in every genre of music.. They just don't have the time or the brain to listen to the good stuff.
It's also a matter of what sells.. People like an ok sounding song that has a catchy tune and interesting lyrics, it's just a generic thing, and there are sadly a lot of times when the song is crap, but every teenybopper likes it and downloads it on limewire.. Just my opinion. I think that every genre should have a chance, you shouldn't diss something you've checked out in depth.

The medias mind control technology, coupled with the overall ethical and moral decay of our society.
Its reward(?) is immediate: gross, insensitive, crass, bass rhythmic mode; there is no deferred reward like that of the great, classical musical compositions. They stay with you. You hear something new and wonderful every time they are listened to. Everything about rap/hip-hop mirrors the worst possible ethos of humanity.
The reasons for its ascendancy, are exactly the same as those for the continual decline of symphonic, opera,or any other of the truly worthwhile musical endeavors.
I'm only grateful that I will be long gone when such audial garbage reaches its zenith, and is the only kind of music played.
Resignedly,
Wotan

Yes, half of the MLBs batter walk up songs are rap/hip hop.
Listen, people say it because its just the genre of the time to look down upon. Look at rock & roll in the 50's. And Jazz in the 30s & 40s.
I dont purchase it but i still listen to it sometimes, i cant deny a good song is a good song.

you're patently ignorant in case you think of that there's no musical expertise in hip hop. Outkast gained the Grammy for many suitable ALBUM OF THE 300 and sixty 5 days in 2003 for "Speakerboxxx/the affection decrease than" like hi? PLEASE instruct your self in the previous making generalized statements approximately genres of song. i don't be attentive to why human beings think of of hip-hop as being non-instrumental while so usually musical compositions in hip-hop are as complex and nicely-progressed as the different form of song. And in case you desire to talk approximately loss of effective song in songs, we could look at pop rock and a great form of option rock... basically becuase you are able to play 4 chords on a guitar and write sappy lyrics that make little women moist, and for this reason sell thousands and thousands, does no longer advise you're a competent musician. The previous 20 hip-hop has long previous from an underground flow in to between the, if no longer the, best impacts on pop lifestyle. Hip-hop is right here to stay, so bounce on.

Rap and Hip Hop has good beats and people like to dance to it!! It's not always about that though....it is about connecting with people through lyrics and sound.....especially in sports, I mean can you imagine playing country music during a game??? Nahhhh!!! It outsells every other genre? Which one? Rap? Hip-hop? There are so many genres within the large classification you are talking about.

Minority/majority rule
The citizens in this country who make up the "majority" of the masses would probably say they don't like this kind of music.
The "minority" of us do. Aaaaannnddddd...... coincentally.... the people in the "minority" tend to be the biggest consumers. Hence the selling of this type of music.
Marketers also realize the audience they have, the market they must cater to. The 16 - 32 age group, for example, would be the type of market that would be into this type of market. Companies adjust with the times to appeal to the consumers.
