this'll definitely piss off the Christian right.
i knew Dumbledore was gay when i was in the next bathroom stall and he was tapping his feet. then he waved his wand underneath the divider...

Honestly i think it was one of her biggest mistakes. I am homophoic and from my point of view i would not of read the series if i had known. I think though that it was a spare of the moment thing i dont think she planned on anyone really asking her that question.
i have looked into this alittle and it does say that dumbledore was in love with Grindelwall. I always thought that dumbledore and proffesor mcGonagall had a little thing going on but i guess we were all wrong. I've read the whole series once and im in the procees of reading it again. I read the 7th one twice so far and i dont think theres any signs besides the fact hes never had a girl friend or a wife besides that i thought he was a lonly old man. Because i have read these and adore them so much i think i will just end up pushing it to the side of my mind in a couple of days and not even remember it.

I thought it was pretty cool. People say they feel 'duped' but I don't know why. Would they feel that way if they found out he was black and not white? Discrimination is discrimination! Perhaps some would- why the heck would it matter??? I think it adds to the point that a persons' sexuality is just a facet of who we are, it doesn't create us totally. In fact, I think it's nice there is a positive gay male role model out there. One that's a regular guy and not 'super sissy' like you see so much on television.
And for the record, I always thought Professor McGonagall was a lesbian to be sure!
But on the bright side (for some folks, at least), he didn't appear to be a practicing homosexual? And we certainly don't know if he'd ever consummated his relationship, for all we know he could be a virgin. That would restore him to his priestly status, would it not?

Maybe she should have added one line to the end of the Deathly Hallows. "And by the way, Dumbledore is gay." That's sorta what she just did.
Here's a spin. It was sexual exploration in his college years, and he gave up sexual relationships after this incident. This is my read, and I'm keeping it. I'd forgive anybody for what happens during college, because that is one SCREWED UP time in a persons life.
I don't care if someone is gay. But I don't want to see a man that I'm supposed to respect doing things that gross me out. I don't advertise my heterosexuality, so why should anybody advertise their homosexuality?

I am not happy about it. I am open minded, I have gay friends, that isn't the issue. Rowling has gone to great lengths to write these books to not offend any one group. Even though the books have Christian symbols, she has not made it overtly Christian and says that Hogwarts is a multifaith school. She has made Dumbledore a wise old man who is almost God like. People of all ages around the world listen and follow his teaching. This is very good. But now she has introduced an element that will divide people and turn some against the teaching that she has worked so hard to spread. This is just plain stupid. Maybe she didn't have enough sleep before she opened her mouth. These are children's books for one. We didn't need to know this. I like the idea that Dumbledore was a celibate person like a wise hermit monk. And he probably was. But I think she shot herself in the foot.

I dunno, I always thought that if anyone in the HP world were to turn out gay it would be Lockhart or Luna Lovegood. Lockhart liked attention & it didn't seem like it mattered what gender it was from. I saw him as either gay or bi. With Luna there was a bit of attraction with her & Neville, but I wondered if part of her ostracization was that she was "different" in ways besides her dad's paper & her actions. There were plenty of wierd people in the wizarding world so I didn't see how her actions were any stranger than others.
I don't really care in the long run. It just feels like she sort of picked Dumbledore at random since he's one of the few characters in the series that never dated anyone. Part of me feels like this is just some publicity stunt for people to buy the books, since while the book sales have been good, they have dropped signifigantly in comparison to the other releases.
I still love the series, so this isn't going to affect my enjoyment of any of the books. Besides, if she keeps releasing these tidbits there isn't going to be anything left for that encyclopedia that she's planning on putting out for charity.

I think she was smart.
Being gay is in fact one of the hardest things people have to deal with. My best friend's sister is a lesbian, and she has to hide it from her parents because they've said if she is they'll throw her out of the house and cut her off finanically. She's only 16, maybe still 15 (I don't see her on a regular basis so I don't know). To make this great man gay is probably one of the best ways to show people it is ok and it does have to be dealt with on a personal level before you can be a confident, strong person.
Obviously I am completely okay with this. :)

Her announcement was irrelevant and quite insensitive on her part.
She has destroyed the innocence in the HP series. She has caused her books to become the butt of every sexual innuendo joke under the sun.
It shows that she doesn't care about her fan base because if she did, she would know that their young, impressionable minds could care less about Hogwarts headmaster's sexual orientation.
She was selfish with that ill-fated statement, thinking only of herself and how it will further her attention-seeking agenda.
