Hey everyone, I am currently just finishing up a computer build

300 W PSU
160 GB Hitachi HDD
Samsung Writer Master DVD Combo drive
3 GB 400 Mhz ram (i believe it's pc3200)
MSI 7207 (K8NGM2-H) Motherboard
Onboard Sound
Onboard Graphics Geforce 6100 128 MB Shared

Everything is going just according to plan, i think....
However, everything is brand new, and thus there is
a) No Operating system
b) the HDD is not formatted
c) the DVD drive is not formatted (either that or not being recognized)

So how do I get around this dillema?
My DVD drive does not allow me to open tray (it is not being recognized) thus i cant insert a bootable windows xp cd, which is useless since my HDD isn't formatted and partitioned.

Any suggestions?

Can i use an external drive of some sort?

Confused..

Please help!

Once you get the CD in there, it will do the formatting and partitioning of the hard drive, so our only problem is getting the CD drive to work. Other than telling you make sure it has power going to it and the cable is hooked up, and looking to see if it is recognized in the BIOS, I can't tell you much more without more information. I an online on messenger if you want to talk.

1. Your DVD-rom should be able to open regardless of whether its recognized or not (hence it should still open even though you have no OS). It's either malfunctioning, jammed, or the power cord to it is probably loose/not connected all the way. I would double check the cables first, then if it still doesn't open, poke a paper clip into the hole in front of the DVD-rom to eject it manually. If nothing seems to get it working, it's most likely defective and needs to be replaced.

You can try using an external CD/DVD rom but it needs to be supported by your motherboard and often times it isn't. I would just buy a new DVD-rom (www.newegg.com has them for less than $20 !!!! That's cheaper than buying a new DVD movie!!) only after you comfirmed that your DVD-rom is defective.

check the connection of your dvd drive. it may be loose. next is to check the ide master/slave jumpers of your hdd and the dvd drive. it's located at the back of the hdd and the dvd. set the the hdd to primary master and the dvd to slave, if you plan to connect the two in one ide. if you will use the secondary ide then there will be no problem.

First, you need a new license for your operating system. Perhaps available from microsoft, etc. Download XP startup disks (floppy) after installing a floppy drive from http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=535d248d-5e10-49b5-b80c-0a0205368124&DisplayLang=en
Should load your drivers for cd/dvd and allow you to install your OS.
