First of all, do not expect to buy your fish and the fish tank on the same day.
You need to get the tank, set it up with the filter and heater, dechlorinate the water and let the water cycle (just let the filter run with no fish in it) for at least 24 hours. Also add all the decorations. If you don't do this, you have a chance of killing your fish.
After that is all done you can go back and pick out your fish.
The kind of fish you get depends on the size of the tank you are buying. Lower cost is usually smaller tanks.
If the tank is under 10 gallons I suggest a Betta fish or some guppies. You can also add the african dwarf frog with these fish too (it's a little frog that lives in the water 100% just like fish).
If the tank is 10 gallons to about 20 gallons, I suggest community fresh water fish. These fish do not usually get too large. They are colorful. You can get a nice variety.
Do not expect to get a ton of fish either. The general rule is for every inch of afish (at their adult size) they need 1 gallon of water.
For example, a 10 gallon tank could hold two fish that reach 4 inches when they are full grown.
Just make sure to ask all the questions to the worker. Let them know it's your first time, and they should be able to tell you how to do it.
I know a lot of people are opposed to chain stores, but I suggest them to "newbies". They have everything laid out, and explain to you on the tanks. Most of the time the workers are able to tell you what you need to know. They also guarantee the fish, usually for 2 weeks. So if you accidentally kill your fish you can return them for a refund.
Never shop at a store that does not guarantee their animals/fish! There is usually a reason why they don't!!
PS- I don't suggest goldfish ever to live in tanks. They get pretty big and they need a lot of space. They also are pretty dirty fish.

well, depends on what you are looking for
if you want tropical fish, eg-tetras, live bearers and things like that you will need a heater as well
if you are getting a heater, i suggest platies, or mollies, if you get good quality they last long, but don't get a sailfin molly as they will get pretty big...
tiger barbs are also good, but need a heater as well. you need top get at least 5-6 but don't worry, they only get up to 1 inch. They like a sandy kinda gravel and lots of plants
if you aren't getting a heater DO NOT GET A GOLDFISH
they DO NOT last long in normal circumstances
try a white mountain cloud, they are small as a gupy, don't need a heater and are quite cute. They do last long, i had a neighbour that had a small pond and had some in there. They breed as well and all she did was everyday feed them! she didnt even change the water as they are wild and originate from china
even better, try a betta (siamese fighting fish) do't cram them up in those small tanks, they can fit in there but they really should be in a bigger tank.Make sure you on;y get 1, as they will probably kill each other, male and male especially. they are low maintenence but are pretty and hardy
good luck!
ps-aviod female guppies, if you aren't breeding them, they have the babies then usually die within 2 days...

Be careful about mixing different kinds of fish. Some types are aggressive while others aren't. It's best to get a tank with all aggressive fish or all placid fish. Mixing them can be disastrous for the less aggressive fish. I have actually seen them being eaten alive by the aggressive fish.

Don't get a big fish like a goldfish or oscar, since they end up requiring very large tanks. Get a small cute fish that catches your fancy, like a molly. Good luck!! And do your research, minimum wage employees at petstores are NOT the experts, they are salespeople.

Consult the person at the pet store...Oh yea buy them from a pet store not a chain store that sells everything....The pet store people know more about it..
The person can consult you about which fishes will live together without eating each other...
FYI... I think that its great that you know the correct usage of "Fishes"...90% of people dont have a clue....
Edit:
If you have two Betas you have FISH...
If you have two Angel fish you have FISH...
If you have Betas and Angelfish..You have FISHES!!!
The usage is correct..
(By the way Betas and Angel fish are not a good match...Its just an example.)

Bettas
Guppies
Mollie
Platys
Danios
Goldfish
Algae Eater
Glass Fish
Gourami
Rainbow
Swordtail
Tetra
Zebra
Of course not all at the same time. But you can pick out which ones will go together and which ones you like the best and which ones will go with you're tank.
You should look at http://www.giveusahome.co.uk/fish/breeds.htm
It has all different kinds of fish breeds.
