You got the wrong era for the Beatles, since they didn't make it big until 1964, and they didn't do their best work until a couple of years before they broke up in 1970. By the time they arrived on the scene, rock 'n' roll seemed to be almost dead, because the top 40 was monotonous. What the Beatles did was remind us what our own music used to sound like before it began to turn into crap. Then we had over a decade of rock that was too good to be played in a 2-minute-and-30-second AM radio format, so most of it was never heard by the majority of people, even in those days. That's why "classic" rock is usually so boring after a while.
