that itch in the night. I am looking for the lightweight, cool to the touch type of sheets, that never have balls on them and don't feel sticky like sateen. What kind of fabric combination am I looking for? And, don't say thread count. I know about thread count... have bought higher counts and still got balls on them. I am convinced it's a specific fabric content or combination of fabric that I'm after. Can anyone tell me that??

Depending on your budget -- Percale is reasonable, lightweight, and durable and after a few washings is very soft and comfortable and I've never had a problem with balling with 100% cotton. Percale relates to the weave (very closely woven) and NOT the fiber content, so look for at least a 50/50 cotton/poly or 100% cotton percale.

If you prefer luxury and can afford it, opt for Egyptian cotton in 500 or more count (Ralph Lauren makes a to-die-for 700 count sheet) -- the higher the thread count, the more luxurious the feel and the longer they will wear, although they will feel heavier.

Yes, there are "higher thread count" sheets out there, but frequently they are made with less desirable fibers or have a higher percent of polyester -- which WILL pill and ball and feel itchy.

Yoa are looking for 100% cotton. Egyptian is best and the highest thread count you can find. The higher the count, the softer the sheets. Get two flat sheets in a size larger than your bed because they may shrink if you wash them in warm or hot. Do NOT put them through the dryer. Line dry and then iron. It's a bit of trouble, but they are worth it. Follow your budget, and stay away from cotton/polyester.

Cotton are the best, I bought a pair of Egyptian sheets a few years ago and they are still sensation today. No balls or have ever been itchy. :-)
