I don't think I need to go to college- all my friends say I'm pretty smart and great with advice. If I couldn't get into counseling, how do I become a principal?

depending on what school system you're talking about..... they all expect different things....
i trust that you're a good listener and can give advice- but you will always be expected to have a degree in some level of psychological studies. There are also lots of legalities that you couldnt even imagine- concerning what can and cannot be said to a student- what will and won't make certain parents upset- that could land the county school system in a lawsuit- this is why many systems require a college degree, serious references- and usually experience- it's very different and carries alot more responsibility than say... when you're dealing with adults out of an office of your own....
good luck:)

In most states you have to have a Master's degree (that is -- a four-year Bachelor's degree and a two-year Master's degree on top of that). Most counselors get a Master's in Counseling. Some states even require that counselors have teaching experience.

To be a principal generally requires that you have a Bachelor's degree and teaching experience of at least two years -- and a Master's degree in Educational Administration or Leadership.

Your best bet is to check with a local university because requirements vary by state.

Best of luck -- but despite being smart, training is necessary to do either job effectively.

oh yes , guidance counselors go to university for 4 years, go to a masters program for counseling, and have an internship in education counseling in the schools.
don't be fooled, it takes alot of work and dedication to become a school guidance counselor.
good luck to you.
