I think it was Nolan Ryan back in the late 70's or early 80's when he was with the Astros

According to the internet I got Nolan ryan the pitcher as the first player to earn a million dollars in a year in baseball. Ryan played 1966 to 1993 and could through pitches around 100mph!. Its amazing how some of them get paid now a days though. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nolan_Ryan
