It depends what type of publishing you want to go with. Commercial publishing generally will not accept new authors unless the following happen: They are intrigued by the author's resume and cover letter. And they really enjoyed the manuscript and believe it has potential. In most cases, authors need agents. And getting agents can be hard. You may write to several agents and to several commercial publishers. 9/10 times you will be rejected. But there's always that one that will say yes. If they do, congratulations!
Or would you rather go with a subsidy publisher? These publishers will publish your work for a fee paid. And this can cost tons of money. Although some offer payment plans, there's no guarantee that your book will sell.
Or what about Self-Publishing? Some publishing companies do offer this for a lesser fee than subsidy publishers. But the drawback is... generally if there's editing you want to do after the book is published, or ready for print, you will incur charges. Depending what your finances are, this can either be expensive or inexpensive. But there is usually more freedom with these types of publishers. Most or none will not chop up your writing with a bunch of hack offs and what nots. And some offer services that include editing, at extra cost.
It's all up to you which you'd rather go with. But it takes time, patience, and a desire to see it happen. Good luck!

Get yourself a copy of Writers Market and seek out agents and small publishers seeking work in your genre. You cannot get through to A list publishers without an A list agent.
Follow submission guidelines. NEVER send someone an unsolicited manuscript. It will get slush-piled and eventually rejected. Send a query letter with a synopsis per instructions. Following instructions is very important here.
Before you send anything to anyone, check with Preditors and Editors and Absolute Write Water Cooler's Bewares and Background Checks and google the heck out of the name. If you find complaints, lawsuits, etc. Skip it.
If you go to my profile you will find I star good Q and A on publishing and writing. Feel free to go through them and print out some that interest you. Print them all out if you want. A lot of professional authors have come here and offered excellent information.
Good luck.
