"it" is the flag, you are correct

if you need a rationale just ask yourself what makes sense. What does the republic stand for? or what does the flag stand for?

the correct choice is the latter, the flag stands for the republic.

It would help if you get the wording of the pledge correct: "I pledge allegiance to the Flag of the USA and to the Republic for which it stands." Now having gotten that out of the way...the it is referring to the Republic for which the flag is a symbol. PEACE!

A minor correction here........it actually says.....
I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America, and to the republic for which it stands ........

It means you are pledging your allegiance to the republic through the symbolism of the flag.

I find it interesting that in that statement our form of government is correctly stated as a republic, not a democracy. The US is not a true democracy but a representative republic.
