Mr. Lincoln where are you?

"Our safety, our liberty, depends upon preserving the Constitution of the United States as our fathers made it inviolate. The people of the United States are the rightful masters of both Congress and the courts, not to overthrow the Constitution, but to overthrow the men who pervert the Constitution. "

"I have always found that mercy bears richer fruits than strict justice. "

"What is conservatism? Is it not adherence to the old and tried, against the new and untried?"

"Prohibition will work great injury to the cause of temperance. It is a species of intemperance within itself, for it goes beyond the bounds of reason in that it attempts to control a man’s appetite by legislation, and makes a crime out of things that are not crimes. A Prohibition law strikes a blow at the very principles upon which our government was founded."

Ronald Reagan. He restored American pride and prestige and helped finally put the nail in the coffin of the Soviet Union. He was probably the last great uniter we had. I would vote for him. (By the way, I'm 17 so I don't remember him, but I have researched thoroughly and have formed an opinion.)

I'd say Grover Cleveland, arguably the last conservative Democrat president the U.S. has had. He vetoed many bills specificly because they violated the Constitution.

It's a shame recent presidents don't care about such matters.

I'm a conservative Republican, but, given your scenario, I'd have to say Harry Truman. He was a maverick. He knew when to use force, he knew when to use the "big stick" of government, and when not to. He was the only President to not cash in on his presidency after he left office.

Perhaps Gerald Ford, he didn't really get a chance.
He had character and good ideas, even though he pardoned Nixon, believing it was the quickest way to heal the nation after Vietnam and Watergate.
