Actually, it's only about 90% -- and it's because we let them.
Basically, far too many lawyers don't care about the ethical obligations of the profession -- even though we have one of the strictest codes of ethics of any profession.
Consider this -- a score of 1/2 wrong on a multiple choice test is still a passing grade on the ethics test -- and a significant percentage of attorneys who take it still fail the test. That alone should be frightening.

I think it's more like 20% give the rest a bad name. Personally it's b/c the perception of lawyers is that they defend bad people, or they reason and rationalize their way past what society deems to be a moral right. Or just do nutty things like getting people millions of dollars just b/c they spilled coffee on themselves...stuff like that. The good lawyers who defend people rarely make the news. :-(

I'm not sure what "it" is.... but "it" is probably the same reason that 99% of all military recruiters give the rest a bad name.

i'm going to circulate with 60:40, and with 2 divorces, baby custody battles - so i think of i've got met lots of the cruddy attorneys in New Mexico and Texas!!!! edit: you recognize that why Sharks won't attack attorneys??? professional Courtesy!!!!

They take people's money, it's as simple as that.
If you lose, they take you to the cleaner.
If you win, they take ONE THIRD of what you get, then you divide the rest among you. When my mother-in-law was killed by a speeding driver, the $100,000 liability benefit was not forthcoming, so an attorney worked on the phone (out of court) to get the insurance company to pay up. The attorney got $33,333, and each of her 10 children each got $6600.
That's just WRONG, and it happens all the time.
