first of all how do you define a "cool" person?s that person someone who belongs in a cool group or someone who can stay calm even in pressure or something or an achiever despite everything or somone who can do anything he/she wants and excel on it? if the "cool" person you're talking about is the second one then being in that setting or situation won't be hard for him/her since he/she is someone who can stay calm, collected and keep his/her wits intact.

A "cool" person is confident in being himself or herself and is only worried about negative opinions by their colleagues if he thinks that they may have some validity.
You mentioned "formidable" group. It sounds like this might be either a hostile or if not hostile, extremely competitive group?
Also, "colleagues", these don't exactly sound like friends. My advice is be friendly and polite, but don't be phony, and if you don't like the direction the meeting is taking, your always free to say you have to go away on pressing business.
Maybe I'm reading to much into the scenario, could use a little more information.

i think to be cool u have to make ppl jealous which i hate... u end up with more friends if u just blend in and dont try to beanything like cool. cool ppl are always the most interesting and intriguing tho so i guess just try to be mysterious lol
