i have a mobo that supports 8 gb rams and has 4 slots
1 is already loaded with a 1 gb stick
so there 3 slots left
and i am going to buy another 4 gb of ram (2x2gb sticks)
so I'll be running the 4 gb in dual channel and the 1 gb in single channel mode will this work?

Check the specs for the system board. It will tell you if that combination will work. As each board is different (and you did not list the model) there is no way to guess.

I believe they will all work but only in single mode. You may be better off removing the 1gb and running the 2x2gb in dual channel mode.

With 64bit you can! Make sure the memory you purchase is the same speed and timing as what you have now.

Why would you wanna do that? Do you really need that?
Most people in this world would love 512MB RAM. You keep that in mind young man.
