Non-profit corporations have to register as such with the state like other corporations. Some non-profits get started by starting under the umbrella of a sponsoring non-profit corp. You need to ask them if they are a sponsored 501(c)3 or do they have their own. If they are sponsored any documentation by law should name the corp. BLAH Blah group a sponsored 501(c)3 by blah blah non-profit corp.
If they say they have their own 501c3 they you will need to check with the IRS as to status.

They should be able to show you a copy of their 501c 3 that all non profit charity groups or organizations have as proof. Oh yes...just because a group states they are non-profit...does not mean they are a charity and you get a tax break from any donation....they have to be 501c 3

Usually the department of corporations in your state has a section where you can find information and the status of corporations incorporated in your state - also if everything is current and whether complaints have been filed against them. Also, visit their offices.
