I had a real problem with air in the hot water radiator and especially in the boiler. I have bled the radiators in the house but cannot seem to do the boiler. When I open the valve by the boiler nothing comes out. Isn't water supposed to come out? The boiler pipes making loud clanking noises. Should I leave that valve open until water comes out, or am I just letting more air into the system by doing this. My plumber also removed the cap from the valve to the overflow tank. Any help would be appreciated.

Check to be sure the water fill valve is working. You may not be getting water into the system.

Open the valve furthest from the boiler first, then work back towards the boiler, bleeding each one until water flows, if no water flows you may have a blockage to clear.
You will not let more air in unless there is a problem with fresh water entry.

This is a bleed valve so water should come out. At times these valves do get garbage in them. Let the pressure out of the tank, then use something , a wire to stick in the hole and wriggle it around until you feel it freely go in. Then put it under pressure again and see if it works this time.
