I think the slasher movies, like Friday the 13th are better b/c Freddy usually kills in weird, never-gonna-happen ways. But some unfortunates really do get hunted down and murdered, so that's more scary/realistic in my book.

Here's a list of the top 100 scary movies, if you'd like more ideas: http://www.bravotv.com/The_100_Scariest_Movie_Moments/index.shtml

Halloween (original)
A Nightmare on Elm Street
Pumpkinhead!

Personally, I don't like the Friday the 13th films. I'd go with Pumpkinhead in its place~great-looking demon heralded with eerie sound of cicadas, remarkable performance by Lance Henriksen, fantastic cinematography, and a solid story (not just teens getting killed one by one).

Others you could try are:
The Haunting (original)
Jeepers Creepers 1 & 2
A Nightmare on Elm Street 3 & 4
Wes Craven's New Nightmare
Fright Night (It has a sequel, but the first is best.)
The Gate (It has a sequel, but the first is best.)
