Sadly, I'm always shocked and dissappointed in the students that local highschools are spitting out. I really think some kids have it down, but there are so many that leak through the cracks it is almost an embarrasment. I know of so few young adults that can actually write a coherant paragraph.

If you're talking about the American citizens, it's appalling. If you're talking about immigrants, they aren't that bad. Most of the immigrants I've worked with in the school system around here have a better command of the English language than the citizens. These students are usually bi-lingual and some can speak even more languages, while most American students can barely say please and thank you in a second language.

Learning more than one language is not easy when you don't practise other languages practically in your daily life..I mean really using them.. And it's true that the immigrants have better bi-lingual tongues than most native English speakers in America. Reason is because they used to learn other language for daily life use..
I'm an Asian, English is not my first language but I used to it and I can speak 2 other languages like Bahasa Malaysia and Mandarin.

think the idea of learning another language may be good but not the way it is taught now. I have a program for my computer to learn to read and write Japanese in 12 weeks and be speaking it like a native but schools can not do that in a year so if they are going to require it, get a better way of teaching the language beforehand.
