I am a PC user all my life, and still in junior high. I am not going to use the computer for gaming, but i do need a lot of memory, ram, and hardrive since i will be using it until college. i have plenty of money in my wallet, a deal i made is that if i pay half of the money, my parents would pay for the other half. I have $3000 which i started saving 7 years ago, so i am able to purchase a $6000 computer. Yay!! Well, I am not a computer nerd and is really confused with either to buy a mac, pc, desktop, laptop. I went many many sites about those mac vs. pc things but half says pc, half says mac. I have no idea of macs and how they work, so it would help if you explain it to me. Which operating system is better? vista or mac osx? well i dont want to go off topic, but just asking. maybe i should buy the desktop because it is way powerful than a laptop, but in the other hand, maybe a laptop because of the portability needed through high school. i am really confused. so please tell me why

I'll tell you the real truth. Not the half-lies, or whole lies, or anything like that.

If we're talking about hardware, Macs have pretty nice hardware. Great specs, nice design, and even a built-in webcam in all models.

PC's have great hardware, depending on which one you want. Sony is definitely one of the tops! HP has a few nice ones, and some of Dell's higher models are very cool.

OS X - no use to me. Everything I can do on OS X, can be done on Vista, much better. I personally prefer Vista more, just because I find it to do a whole ton of things for me. It just works. All my friends use Windows, and our stuff can work together real well. Tons of programs really work there. I only like a few media programs on OS X. But Adobe has some made on Windows too.

Windows - XP is very stable. Vista is pretty awesome. Only problem with Vista is driver support. SP1 will offer a ton of features! I like Vista over the latest version of OS X Tiger, because Vista does tons more.

I find a laptop is much more mobile and useful. I have an awesome Sony Vaio laptop, and it just works. Sony support is really awesome, and the design is very sleek. All my friends always have that look that say "I want that!". It's that cool.

So I suggest you buy a Sony Vaio laptop, they're pretty awesome, and I really recommend them : http://www.sonystyle.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/CategoryDisplay?catalogId=10551&storeId=10151&langId=-1&categoryId=16154

I can't tell you what to buy, only you can decide that, but I'll tell you which I prefer...
I like PCs and Laptops....I have both...I had a laptop first and I like it a lot because I can bring it places...but at the same time I like the PC because it can do more power wise than my laptop can...even though my laptop is very nice, I wont ever use it for gaming...playing a game from yahoo here and there but nothing else...and I have a dell with Vista on it..
I prefer XP but I dont think many computers come with that...if you're not used to it, vista can be a pain in the ***...it prompts you for a lot of things XP did not...
My PC has XP on it and has a lot more information on it than my laptop but both serve their purposes very well.
I havent had a mac since the early 90s so I dont know much about them now...
my advice to you is to take a good look at what you are going to be using it for and if you need portability, I would suggest a laptop. You could always try going to your nearest store that sells computers and try talking to someone there and see if they can make some suggestions for you...

Go with a mac desktop. The new OS X "Leopard" can do way more than vista anyways, and there are games available for mac. Oct. 26th I'm planning on buying the new iMac for $1199 if it comes pre installed wth leopard. Anyways, a mac is much more reliable than a pc, I use them both in the same day (macs at school, my pc at home) and I love mac because the OS isn't a POS. Windows freezes all the time and always is vulnerable to viruses that can even destroy your hard drive. Mac's are based on the unix OS, a single kernel operating system, which makes them A LOT less vulnerable. If you think about it, mac is a better buy than pc, sure it cost a little more than a pc, but in the end it will even out. Buy a webcam, anti virus, probably spend money repairing stupid errors in your pc, add some desent software and you probably spent more than that on a pc, when you could have just bought a mac. And the OS will take about a day to learn if that, it is so much easier to operate than a pc. And apple has a help menu in the menu bar that has PC to Mac translations (all programs=macintosh hd, etc.)

LOL, if your playing with 6000 dollars I would looking at alienware's website or the high end XPS laptops. Macs are terrible for upgradeability, don't believe me? Find someone who still uses a mac after having it for 5 years. The very best computer you can get is the one you build yourself and the more you say you won't be using it for games the more you realize you can't when you buy one that doesn't play games. I am a grown man and even I need a good game once in a while.

It is no longer a matter of Mac vs PC, since Mac does Windows XP and Vista just the same as a PC does! With the rock-solid hardware that comes in a Mac (I have a 1st generation 17" Macbook Pro laptop 2.16 GHz Core Duo, and I wouldn't have bought it if I couldn't have installed Windows XP) and the capability to install and use Windows just like any PC box can, I'm getting more value because I can run OS X too! You can't do that with a PC -- run either Mac OS or Windows OS.

Oh yah, it's fun to be able to build your own box PC, but I'd buy this Macbook Pro again if I was given the choice. Since I too was a huge Windows user for my business and video passion hobby, I absolutely would not have made a Mac purchase without knowing I could take my old software with me. With Bootcamp, and Parallels Desktop for Mac, the purchase was easy.

Now I'm using OS X more than Windows XP. I'm not yet convinced it's better than XP was -- afterall, it's not really a matter of comparing the operating system. It's about having quality applications that do what I need. Mac software makers are years behind Windows software makers, it seems. On some things. On most things. But I have a feeling with the great things Apple is doing, that software availability is gonna change. It already has, starting with Apple itself making some great applications in iWork and iLife. But there are still some things still needed, and I have a feeling they are gonna come.

But if they don't, I've still got a computer that will run XP and Vista, so I am not worried at all. Truly, I think the 17" Macbook Pro was the best choice of a computer I could have made to purchase.

More: OS X will read NTFS, so I can use my NTFS drives in OS X. And I just picked up this great free application called HFS Explorer that lets Windows read my Mac HFS drives, so no longer am I stuck transferring files at network speeds from HFS to NTFS.

Definitely you want to go with a mac laptop, you honestly wont get a better brand than the Mac Book Pro 17. You will save and still have a wonderful computer without having to buy a lot of additions. If you want to go top end you might actually spend over 3500 for a high end Dell but this would have the same capabilities as a Mac Book Pro 17. The high end Dell I am talking about is the DELL XPS 1710; sure a high end but it has the same thing as the Mac Book Pro, plus Vista is not all that and the Dell comes built with that. The Vista is a memory hog to say the least with limited support. View the differences at http://mac-laptop.com/

Television set is produced to the lowest common denominator - i.e., the average IQ of the general public, whereas a written publication is written to the highest common denominator

The answers don't appear to be of much help. With the money you have, you can buy two Macs. You can get a decent iMac for around $1500 and a decent MacBook Pro for around $2200. So you'd have money left over (buy an iPod). Best bet, ask someone who is non-biased. Consumer Reports just did a survey of 100,000 computer users and tested all the new models. The top rated laptop is a MacBook Pro (best tech support and batterylife). The iMac was highly rated also in the desktop section. Both are wi-fi ready, both have webcams, both would be running the new MacOs X which means none of the 115,000 Windows viruses to worry about. The iMac takes up minimal desk space, & looks good. As to which OS is better, read some of the comments here in the Yahoo Answers sections. Everyday people are asking how to get Vista off their computer, they want to go back to XP. In reality, both MacOS X and Vista are good choices, but Vista is a memory hog (2 gb ram just to run it).
