Have you ever been typing something, and you realize that you've made a typo earlier in the paragraph, so you place the cursor at the spot to fix the typo, and while you are fixing it, the letters start disappearing (like you're typing OVER what was already there) instead of the letters you are typing just moving forward? That would be a perfect time to you the INSERT button.
(I hope that wasn't too confusing. It's kinda hard to explain, but if you've ever had that happen, it's frustrating!)

Insert is a toggle function. If insert is activated it will insert new text that you type rather than overwrite the old text. If it's in the insert mode, you will change the mode back to overwrite if you press the insert key; that's what I mean by a toggle function.

In word processing programs the DEL and INS buttons are used to insert or delete characters.
If you press DEL you can type over other characters or delete them if the cursor is right in front of the characters. It also works a backwards backspace.
If you press INS you can add characters in the document.

INSERT is used for word programs such as MS word or notepad,
so you dont have to delete whole lines to add something,
if you want to "insert" somthing, use copy and paste
