If my boss is extremely religious, and I'm agnostic, can they fire me due to my lack of the same beliefs?

Most states have employment at will laws which mean that employers can fire you at any time without giving a reason

There is an exception to the at will law, and that is violation of state public policy. Most states consider being fired for race or religion, or lack thereof, to be a violation of public policy

So in most states, your boss would be in trouble if you could prove he fired you for lack of religion. The next question is how do you prove it? You may want to contact a lawyer or your state labor board

The Civil Rights Act of 1964, Title VII prohibits employers from discriminating against employees because of their religion in hiring, firing, or other conditions of employment.

Employees cannot be forced to participate, or not participate, in religious activities at their work place.

Legally, your employer cannot fire you due to your beliefs.

A private company can usually fire you for any reason or no reason at all -- unless there is something in your contract or the company policy manual to the contrary.

The normal rules dealing with religious discrimination don't apply -- 1st Amendment protections only apply against the govt, not against private companies.

However, many states have anti-religious discrimination laws -- either in the state constitution or state statutes -- and those might protect you.

No, unless it was a requirement to being employed that you must be very religious and they feel that you do not meet those requirements. Otherwise it is illegal in the US to fire someone for this because it is discrimination. Good luck, best wishes.

No, not in the US anyways. Religious discrimination is illegal. Of course the fact may motivate them to find another reason, a legal one, to fire you. At which point you will be hard pressed to prove religion has anything to do with it.

Your best bet is to keep your mouth shut and do your job.

He can't fire you for that officially.

But he can fire you for other things, and if he wants to find something to get rid of you, he can and will.

I'm willing to bet however, that if he thought you were a great worker and a big asset to his team, he would care less about your religious beliefs.

If you are foolish enough for that to become some kind of obstructive issue between you, I'm sure he could figure out some way to be rid of you. You need to simply "not go there", and to get on with doing your job.

He can fire you for non-compliance of his lawful orders but not for your being an agnostic.

They could fire you... but it's not legal. However if you're working at a church there may be some other rule.
