I know how to change a tire but not the oil. My husband taught me a couple of years ago. I figure that especially the changing tire thing is something that every woman should know!

I went to the Self-Help center at an Army Post when we were really poor and learned how to change the oil myself. We had a 3/4 ton van and all the men there laughed at me. I had trouble getting the oil filter off.
It is not fun changing a tire when one is not on level land, having 5 yelling children, and in the middle of nowhere, toward evening, with no flashlight.
Thank God for AAA-American Automobile Association.
I've been a member over 20 years and the membership is good if you are in someone else's car that breaks down, runs out of gas, or has a flat tire!

I learned how to change a tire when I got a flat and all I had were the instructions in the manual. It worked out ok. Have no idea how to change the oil though. Here's a site that can tell you how:
http://autorepair.about.com/od/regularmaintenance/ss/oil_change.htm
I find the best way to learn how to do something is to get some instructions and go for it. (But have a plan B just in case, like someone you can call who knows how to help you out)

Yup.I went to a vocational HS and we had to go through all the programs before we decided which trade to take, auto body, cosmetology, drafting ect ect...and then my ex bf took me to the navy base all the time to do the oil it's easy.We used their lift,(u dont need one though)drained the oil pan by pulling the lpug out,it drained into a pan, changed the oil filter and put the oil back in the car under the hood...been a while though. It's so easy and useful to know how to do both...
and yes don't be an idiot (like some ppl)and not check the oil and ruin your car geesh check ALL the fluids!AND the air pressure, listen for any noises not normal, tune ups are important as well ect ect cars are too damn expensive to just drive them to death and not take care of them....

I learned how to change a tire in 1980 - my cousin's mom taught me. I do know how to check the oil, but not change it.
My DD's father required her to learn how to change the oil and a flat tire before she could get her driver's license.

I learned to check the oil in my car, when I had to buy a new enigene because mine burned out 'cause I never put oil in the car. Then I learned to put oil in the car, but I still go to the shop to have it changed. And to change a tire, I've watched it done and if you gave me enough time, I'm sure I could figure it out. Didn't look that hard.

The biggest trick to change a tire is before you jack the car up. Loosen the lugs by placing the tire on a nut, then instead of trying to turn it by hand, position it so you can just push it down with your foot.
Oil changes are a breeze, even if you have to remove the skid plate.
Guy or girl, everyone should be able to do those 2 things.

Yes. I was taught how to change the oil and do many things with the car. Yet, I would rather let "any man" do it. This way, the man will think he is "stronger" than I. It's just a ego thing for them. Peace, Love and God's Blessings.

Yes. I learned when I was 20. An ex taught me.
When I was 25 I learned how to fix the breaks and helped with transmission and engine work. My sons dad taught me that. I guess I like guys who are very handy with cars and other jobs around the house.(painting, tile floor, carpentry, building things, etc)
