One could write a book on why the 60's were important. From the race into space to the fight for civil rights. From the creation of the peace corps to fight hunger to the peace movement opposing the war in Vietnam. The assassinations of great leaders like John and Bobby Kennedy and Martin Luther King and Malcolm X. The Cuba missile crisis brought us closer to nuclear war than one can imagine. Just hours away from the end of civilization. Changes in the way people talk to each other and greet each other as formalities of the past were dropped. Hello Mr. Smith, became , hi John. This is just a few of the many changes that made the 60's an important decade.

The 60's were the first decade in which communications was really easy. Satellite communication had come into it's own. Hand held, reliable cheap radios were available (Read about Charles Deguale to find out why that's important) and radicals world wide could "Get the Word out" with Photo copiers. Dictators the world over smashed xerox machines wherever they could find them. The difference is that a printing press is big and takes special training to operate. Even the 1960's photo copiers would easily fit in a closet and anyone could run them.
The mass communication, for better or worse, allowed for a mass exchange of ideas and that is what made the 60's great.

It was a time of huge change, in many respects. Also, the popular culture i.e. music, art, movies, books, etc, was and remains fantastic. Many changes in the food world, politics, unrest, dis- satisfaction with the Vietnam war and more. The television programs from the 1960's are still among the very best, to me.

In the U.S. it was the decade of the SDS, the Yippees, the Black Panther Party. In France it was the decade of May '68, and the Situationists. In Czechoslovakia it was the decade of the 'Prague Spring.' I could go on and on in Cuba, Vietnam, Mexico, etc.

p.s. Thanks for your thumbs down - now go back to your Beatles and your mini skirts.
