hmm, just kinda wondering why people who said that you need at least a 10-20 gallon for only 1 goldfish got thumbed down, but i guess that's typical for them who don't want to hear the truth but what they want to hear
And yes, they need at least a 10-20 gallon tank just for themselves which needs to be filtered
read the following article to understand a bit better

Hope that helps
Good luck

When many people think of goldfish, they picture a cute little fish swimming around happily in a bowl. This might be a pretty picture to us, but to a goldfish it is a nightmare.
Goldfish grow large and they produce more waste than your typical fish, so with that said, let me explain the toxins of ammonia and how to control it in a tank.
As goldfish excrete waste into the water, they also release ammonia, which is toxic to them in large amounts. If you only have a gallon of water and a two inch fish, it will not take much time for the water to become deadly. If you have a ten gallon tank with adequate filteration and a two inch fish, the ammonia should never get high enough to be harmful as long as partial water changes are being made monthly. An Ammonia test kit is also beneficial to own.
plus the smaller tha bowl or tank, the less oxygen...how are you going to put in place a proper filtration system in a little jar??
not to mention the fact that the amount of roaming space in a little bowl or jar is not even close to enough for a gold fish...research has found that the old belief that goldfish have a very short memory is very untrue...so swimming around in the same little bowl every day is enough to drive some fish insane...yep even fish can be driven to insanity...
other scientists have found that the round glass distorts the images the fish see when they look through it so much so that it actually damages the fish's eyes and can cause blindness...
in short, buying a fish n dumping it in a little bowl or jar is not just cruel and insensitive ( fish have a very similar nervous system to ours so they feel their insides and gills burning from the ammonia levels being too high), it is also sentencing an innocent animal to painful deqath...if they are lucky they will die within the first week, but some have to endure this cruel lifestyle for months before finally going belly up...
if you cannot home a fish properly, dont get one so you can watch it die...the average goldfish in a properly sized and maintained tank will live about 8 to 10 years...so if you are serious about taking on a fish, do it the right way, dont make it suffer..it is as much an animal as a dog or rabbit...just cos it cant be taken for walks or cuddle doesnt make it an expendable object...get a proper tank and equipment before getting a fish.

Not long in a bowl or jar. In an appropriate sized tank, possibly 20-30 years.

Hi Mooka, It will probably only last a few days in a bowl-a very short &unhappy life so please get your fish a 20 gallon [at least] tank with a fitted lid & a filter immediately. The link below tells you all about whyGoldfish need huge tanks & how to prepare & maintain them.

If you have a filter, and the goldfish is treated well, 10-20 years.

a day or two. Please don't kill it! Geez people, there are bettas, why get a giant fish that needs oxygen replaced in the water like a goldfish just to watch it suffocate to death in a jar or bowl?? sick sick sick
PS, dont get me wrong -- bettas dont belong in jars either. Dont get any pet if you are too cheap to keep it in an appropriate home.
