RE:
Have you ever smelled the herb, Valerian Root?
Just a note about it:
This is an herb that is brewed to make a calming tea.
This is the little herb that was first used to make the medication, Valium.
And yes, you can still buy it at herb shops.
How would you describe the fragrance?

Valerian is a relaxant and a soporific. It can be taken as tea, tincture or capsules/tablets. I usually recommend liquid form as it gets into the system much more efficiently as a tea, tincture, infusion or decotion, than w/ caps or tabs. W/ teas and tinctures, one also does not then have to worry about excipients and additives/binders/fillers. Yes, it works and works well, being one of the stronger sedative herbs. Some people do NOT like the fact that the root smells like old dirty athletic socks however. Valium was actually originally synthesized from valerian root.

Yes, I sometimes take a Valerian root supplement if I am having trouble sleeping... tends to make you drowsy and supposedly helps you sleep better throughout the night.

I don't like the smell at all, it smells like rancid damp wood to me. I do take it on occasion - I don't like the smell (or the taste) but it does work for me.

The stronger it smells the fresher it is. And it works very well to help with sleep or just to calm your nerves.

Fresh, it is commonly likened to the odor of wet, used athletic socks, and I'm not kidding about this.
