Why do packs of cigarretes have the piece of foil under the top?

Is it to protect them, or keep them fresh or something?

Unless things have changed in the last few decades, it's not just under the top. It completely envelopes the fags.

It's a moisture barrier that makes the packet a small humidor. Cigarettes that dry out burn harshly, I am told, unlike fresh ones.

It aids in keeping the tobacco from drying out to much.

have not smoked in l2 years now but i think it was for freshness.
