However, Duann, the rules also state that if an invalid signal (any signal that does not meet the requirements to be valid) is made, the ball is dead and the receiving team is deprived of the opportunity to move the ball forward. It seems that THAT is the part of the rule that the ref missed. If a signal is made (valid or invalid) the ball is dead. And there's no question Taylor made a signal.

I live in Oklahoma City. Thus, I had absolutely no emotional stake in last night's Louisville UConn football game. Still, the failure of the back judge to acknowledge the UConn player's fair catch signal was so egregious that I was offended. Indeed, the reason the touchdown ensued was that everybody in the ballpark saw and understood the UConn player’s fair catch signal – except the back judge.

I'm an LSU fan and this is not a game I am very concerned with,. I am pulling for Louisville however because I feel they are the better of the two teams. I saw the call you are referring to and yes I believe the ref's messed up this call bad. Unfortunately the play was not reviewable by the booth. Just one more case why they need to fix the review system or get rid of it. I don't see the system being fixed, and I don't see it going away so it's something we will have to live with.

Thanks salavador for the addtitional info Yes I am one of the IDIOTS that watched the game. I am of severe retardation and my answer reflects my deficiency.
The official definition of a fair-catch signal in the rule book calls for a player to raise his hand above his head and wave it back and forth more than once, something the player didn't do. Shame on the Louisville players and coaches for not knowing the rules.
ARTICLE 2. A valid signal is a signal given by a player of Team B who has obviously signaled his intention by extending one hand only clearly above his head and waving that hand from side to side of his body more than once.
The key is the hand signal above the head more than once (which would be twice.)... the kid just raised his hand and did not wave it twice.

It was not a valid fair catch signal, there for it was invalid fair catch signal. should have been blown dead and a flag thrown as soon as the U-Conn player began to run. The result should have been 5 yard penalty from the spot of the catch 1 down U-Conn

Not cheering for either team either, but if it wasn't a fair catch call, it sure as Hell looked like one.
