my sister is 9 and she is all about the accessories....
I'd get some colorful hairbands and bracelets, maybe a "military cap" as they are called they are pretty hot right now, and knits like soft sweaters are always a big hit.... or a claires or the icing giftcard...

Ask her what she wants, and if all else fails money or gift cards to a favorite store of theirs does the trick for pretty much any age.
I would guess she is into that Hanna Montana chick (My nieces love her.) Look at the Disney Channel for a few minutes and you will get an idea.

I think clothes would be good all females loves clothes or shoes. What might make a more special gift is if you have the time and go shopping with her for the clothes. Make it a girls day out

My nephew turns 9 on Halloween. I'm still thinking of what I should buy him. Does she like dolls? Maybe buy her some toys or clothes that she likes.

Why not take her shopping. Let her decide. If this isn't possibly then ask her. I've found that at this age they really KNOW what they want and don't mind telling you "if" you ask. I don't know her to tell you what to buy her. OR...you could take her out to the movies...ice cream...the works for her birthday on another day. However I think if you ask her she'll let you know.

claires would be great..i know my 11 year old sister and her friends love a site called webkinz...you buy a stuffed animal from webkinz (they have them almost any girly store or gift shop) and they can get on the site and play games, decorate houses for their animals, ect. I know this is big with young girls.

A thoughtful gift is something that caters to her likes. Find out from her mother what she loves right now and get a gift along those lines i.e. find out what she's 'into'
