Can someone give me the simplest, yet MOST explanatory reason how to solve these equations....

1. 6-3(6-3)

I know the Order of Operations--but I'm confused. Once I get to 6-3(3)........then what? Please explain this thoroughly. I know the answer is 9, but how?

2. 9 - 3(-3 -1)

Once I get to 9-3 (-4).......what do I do? I should multiply but....what do I multiply first, ect.,? I know the answer is 21, but how???

Thanks!

1. 6-3(6-3)
6-3(3)
6-9
-3
On this one, the answer is not 9, its -3. After you do the work in parentheses, the next thing is exponents, but there aren't any. So you either divide or multiply. There is nothing to divide but you can multiply. You multiply the -3 that is right next to the parentheses by whatever is inside, in this case 3. So that is 9 and then you subtract, since that is the only thing left. And you subtract 9 from 6 and get -3.

2. 9-3(-3-1)
9-3(-4)
9+12
21.
You're right on this one. It is 21. After you combine what is in the parentheses and get -4, you have to multiply the same way you did before. Multiply -3*-4 and you get 12. Since a negative times a negative is a positive, it becomes 9+12, not 9-12. Finally, you combine 9+12 to get 21.

Sorry this was so long and I hope it helped you!! =]

Actually you got the first problem wrong. Remember: PEMDAS (Parentheses, Exponents, Multiply, Divide, Addition, Subtraction) For #1 you work on the parentheses first so you have 6-3(3). If you have no exponents to work with move to multiplication, so do -3*3 to get -9. Then you do the only thing left: 6-9 which is -3.

Do the same for the next problem. Work inside the parentheses first to get 9-3(-4). There are no exponents so move on to -3*-4. Two negatives = a postive so it is 9+12. 9+12 is 21.

♥The answer to the first question wouldn't be nine because

-3(3)= -9 and the you would do 6-9 which whould = -3
but the second one should be 21

-3(-4)= 12 then you would have 9+12=21. You always multiply by what touches the ( )'s♥

Ok, this is kind of hard to explain online, but I'll give it my best shot.

Order of Operations and Signs - () parenthesies, ^ exponets, * multipication, / division, + adding, - subtraction

Problem:
9-3(-3-1)

Step 1: ()

So -3-1=-4

Which gives you 9-3(-4)

Step 2:

Since there are no exponets you move to multipication.

-3(-4) Since the -3 is next to (-4) with no sign or space that means multiply.

So -3(-4) =12

Now you have 9+12

Step 3:

9+12 = 21

I din't do your other question because I think the answer is -3 not 9 which may be why you are having trouble.

I really hope this helps.

1.
firstly multiply the brackets by -3, which would give -18+9. then simply add that to the 6 which would total up -3.
or when you get to 6-3(3) times 3 by -3 which gives -9 and add that to the 6 = 6-9 = -3.

2.
again with the second one times -3 by -4 = 12, then add on the 9 = 21.

helps to remember the rule of BODMAS - do operations in the order of Brackets, pOwers, Division, Multiplication, Addition, Subraction.

001. first do the 6-3 in the parenthesis, which gives you 3. now you end up with this: 6-3(3). then subrtact 6-3 which gives you 3. then you're left with this: 3(3). times 3 by 3 which gives you your final answer: 9.

002.okay first subtract -3 from 1. basically you're adding them because a minus is technically plus negative; it'll look like this: -3+-1=-4. after you get that, subtract 9 from 3 giving you 6. so now you're left with this: 6(-4), which equals -24.

i hope i helped! :)

p.s.
i dont understand how you got 21 for number 2.. how'd you get 21?
