What is something other than mothballs that I can use in my closets? Is there something that won't make my clothes stink? Is cedar effective at repelling moths?

Lavender oil will repel clothes moths.

Cedar oil is not effective against clothes moths, but storing clothes in a tightly sealed container like a cedar chest is effective if there is no infestation. Another very useful and safe method of control is to simply get the clothes out of storage, hang them out in the open air in the sun, and give them a good brushing.

BTW, I have a friend who insists on keeping all of her clothes in mothballs in a cedar chest. She just doesn't quite believe that there's no such things as a polyester-eating insect. I also have not been able to persuade her that storing clothes freshly cleaned is useful. Sigh.

Pet stores can sell you rodent cage litter made of cedar shavings. Put the shavings in socks or something in several places in your closets. Fluff them up every few weeks to let new smell out. I had a mothball in one hand and a mothball in the other hand. Know what I had? One really big moth.

There are definitely more natural alternatives to traditional mothballs. Cedar wood apparently is supposed to work, but I've never tried it since I don't have any clothes-eating moths in my closet. They have cedar wood hangers, balls, and blocks readily available at most grocery and drug stores. Lavender is supposed to work well too. The problem with moth balls is no matter how hard I try and how good my aim is, I never hit any moths with them. They're just too darn fast and fluttery.

Yes, cedar wood, chips and balls all repel moths. But if you don't like the smell, it won't do you much good.

I'm thinking fresh lavender was also a moth repellant, but it could just be a fabric freshener for stuff that's been stored too long in one place.

Cedar works great...you can buy cedar hangers or they also sell cedar balls. I would put them in the pockets of things hanging in the closet.

You can buy pine or cedar shavings in the pet dept at Wal Mart. I put the cedar shavings in net bags and hang them in my closets.
A fairly large bag is relatively inexpensive.
