Aren't people tired of playing Theme from Mario, Canon in D, Themes from Silent Hill, and Moonlight? I mean 90% of those people even don't know that Moonlight is a sonata with THREE movements, Pachelbel wrote more pieces than just C in D and there are MUCH MORE creative pieces than Mario and that Silent Hill stuff. The interpretations are often terrible and people don't seem a wee bit interested in taking a look at the dynamics. My friend has trouble playing C in D legato. Ughhhh....

Oh, for Fribblefrumpskin's sake, Al, give it a REST. When you're good, you're very good, and when you're bad, you're *od-awful. These self-serving questions do become very trying -- still on your side, evenso, but your passion and enthusiasm alone, worthy as they are, and to be encouraged, nevertheless just don't frigging cut it anymore -- and they are unanswerable as questions, unless you want absolutely everyone just to pander to your pre-occupation 'du jour' here, at your bidding, by their mewling 'yes Al' on demand. Without your wanting to join us in a discourse of opinion, and varied opinion at that, without these 'honey-trap' questions, I'm going to have to ignore your public Qs because I really can't stomach much more of this. As regards your headline Q, my answer is No. Feigned, assumed superiority, without a track record, no matter how loudly proclaimed, doesn't make it valid. Just more ill mannered. Think a little: when you do, you have shown you have interesting things to say, **quietly**.

I agree witj you 100%. I'm sick and tired of heraing references to the same few pieces over and over and over again. There are literally THOUSANDS of wonderful piece s to discover and love. REMEMBER you all hearsd the Pachelbel Canon or Vivaldo Four Seasons for the first time once so why not keep that mind open to 100s more great discoveries?

I almost hate the Moonlight Sonata now, how often have I heard it in poor performances repeatedly. Be adventurous. Open your ears and discover the multitudinous joys of all those as-yet uneard musical gems.

Ha! I hear you. I play lots of weddings and it seems like every bride thinks they're being exceptionally unique and creative by asking for Pachelbel's Canon.

However, since it's nice that they're excited about music at all (lots of people have zero interest in classical music), I smile politely and play the piece. I've found it's better to have a good attitude about it and then commiserate later with your musician friends.

You can always suggest more creative and lesser-known pieces later, once they've gotten over the initial excitement of playing/hearing one of their favorite tunes.

O.K. were all a little tired of the canon in d references, but take a chill pill Al. If those questions irritate you, do what I do and ignore them. At least they relate to the topic of the forum... they are no more irritating than the ones that have nothing to do with the subject at hand. Not everyone knows a bunch about classical music and we should take it upon ourselves to enlighten them. I personally don't want people to get the impression that classical music enthusiasts are a bunch of elitist snobs - I rather encourage them to open their minds and discover there is so much more to it than c in d and fur elise. But frankly - you are not doing much to help the cause.

even though you make think cannon in D is a cliche, there's a reason its played at weddings all the time. its really a beautiful work and a great example of ground bass and cannon.

works that are really famous are for a reason. don't knock it until you can write it.
