i really feel sorry for them. not the starving children, but the rich conservatives. poor them. they're not going to be able to install that fourth golden fountain in their front yard, because they're going to have to pay a couple extra bucks in tax money so those "irresponsible" poor people living with five siblings, a single mom, and no money can eat.

Ah, come on, give it a rest.
No one from either side of the isle wants to see starving children without any shelter. That's why we have shelters and food banks and soup kitchens in every city in this country. We provide ADC checks, heating assistance, rental assistance, food stamps, job training and social services. We provide health clinics and laws which mandate treatment in any hospital with an emergency facility - to anyone seeking treatment, including illegal aliens.
What we don't need is more government bureaucracy in our lives - grossly expensive, poorly run programs over run with corruption and inefficiency and no one held accountable.
I came from a single parent home and earned everything I have - this is, after all, the land of opportunity.
(And, for what it's worth, unless there are some valid circumstances which cause this situation - death of parent, divorce and a dissappearing act or some other situation out of her control - a "single mom with five siblings" is very irresponsible indeed.)

Okay, so our income is close to your $70k/year ... and we were homeless and we give to the charities that help the homeless. We took in a homeless family and helped them until they got a place of their own to live. By the way, we do NOT have ANY 'golden fountains' in our yard ... we live in a third floor walk up (no elevators) and pay a very small rent because we would rather help others find homes than own a large home ourselves. Yes, we are 'conservatives' ... but we do CARE about people. I'm sorry to 'blow your argument' but people who make only $70k/year are NOT RICH ... we still have bills to pay, and some of us are RESPONSIBLE about how we spend our money. We KNOW that the 'homeless' are not all there because they are 'irresponsible' ... because we were homeless ourselves once ... it was difficult, but we now have a good 'home' (which we CHOOSE to rent) and a good income, and we STILL HELP THE HOMELESS.

I think starving children should be given shelter....I don't think that crack mommies are suitable parents and should qualify on welfare. I by no means have cash to toss around, but I have seen the impact of bad parents on children. I have seen what crack does to a child..I have seen the pain, physical/ mental deformity...Have you? It is so easy to sit there and say this is awful, but until you have been in those trenches there is no way you can understand. Have you ever seen a child you have tried to help get taken away by CPS because their mommy was hooking? He was even the lucky one. Poor and irresponsible are different beings entirely. Poor is honest...Irresponsible is reprehensible.
It is easy to be liberal when you have not truly seen the destruction of society. You feel you bad for them...Well do something productive. Go volunteer in a inner city school, go volunteer in a battered woman's shelter...or just complain..Really..How do you have the right to go there.
I never thought you were on welfare...You would not of asked such a question if you were...Go into the trenches..See the real world...Liberals like you make me so upset. We should all be working for the betterment of our society and not just bitching.

As a rich (30k/year) bible-beating (atheist) conservative, I have to say most of you miss the damn point. Instead of forcing charity on everyone who works to support those who don't choose to, it is far better to make them suffer for their inefficiencies. We have a system already in place for identifying children in awful conditions, and whether or not it works depends on whether you're voting for the hippie or the business man, because it all starts at the top. Social workers are hired by the state, which is run by the people you elect and they appoint. If the system doesn't work, instead of blaming someone, take a little initiative towards fixing it.

$70,000 is your marker for distinguishing between being well off? Where do you live, the Dominican Republic? Because 70k in the USA is nothing. There are people earning more than that trying to put food on the table and find suitable housing. So what the heck are you talking about?

OK - that salary won't go far in a major metropolitan area for a family with 2 or 3 kids in college. That $70k/year conservative may be at the peak of their earning career which has taken them 20 years or more to do. And you want to use government confiscation on that person? Is that compassionate?

what planet have you been living on. We have been "paying a couple extra bucks in tax money" since the mid 60s. the problem is not going to go away no matter how much money we throw at it. Wouldn't it be better to offer child care, job training and the chance for a better life rather than a few more dollars of pity money. And while you are at it please recall that some of the richest people in congress are liberals.

Your socialist rant is an exaggeration of how far $70K will go. The bottom line is that my money is mine, not yours and not societies. When you start pulling my shifts for me, you can make demands on my income. Until then, pay for your own spawn or get sterilized.
Since you're so rich, kick in the money out or your own funds. The war on poverty run by our government is already a $2 trillion failure and you're asking for more? How dare you make demands on the income of others.
Did you know that if the Democrats get their version of SCHIP pushed through, those rich $72K conservatives will also be getting free health care for their children?

Well, not every conservative is like that. Consider the following talk:
There is a guy on welfare? OK.. now what?
A conservative would say, tell him to get his *** to work ASAP.
A liberal would say, keep him on welfare for as long as he wants.
Remember.. that welfare dude is not disabled or anything.
Also, it is a fact that 8 out of 10 people of welfare do NOT deserve to be on welfare, they are just hiding taxes and making more money thourgh welfare.... doesn't that wana make you a conservative now?

since when is it my "obligation" to pay for other people's children?? when did it become the government's obligation??
i had ONE child because i knew i could only support ONE child...it was not my dream to have only one...i wanted more...but being a responsible GROWN UP...i realized...
i had to SUPPORT my family....feed us...clothe us...shelter us....and that i did! poor white trailer trash got herself an education and a good job... didn't ask mommy and daddy for money....didn't inherit a dime....and didn't ask uncle sam for a hand out...
worked a job full time while i went to school...and carried 19 to 21 credits a semester...
i took responsibility...cuz' that is what grown ups do....
