Here is a list of some of the writers I've enjoyed from the time period you have asked for. (I've made a note of those whose works were primarily published after the 70s.)
Ernest Hemingway
Gabriel Garcia Marquez (60s - 90s)
Arthur Miller (Playwright)
John Steinbeck
Ayn Rand
Truman Capote
Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn (60s - 90s)
Philip Roth (60s - present day)
Betty Smith (author of A Tree Grows In Brooklyn)
If I had to choose an absolute favorite, it would be a tie between Ernest Hemingway and John Steinbeck.

James Michener (1907-97). Pulitzer Prize winner with over 40 big hits including: Hawaii, Texas, Chesapeake, Centennial, The Drifters, The Source, Tales of the South Pacific, Alaska.
An orphan raised by Quakers, he made history popular for many Americans. His sensitive and deep insights into history and people made for really interesting reading. I miss him.
