YES! This reminds me of an episode of The Office, where Michael organizes a fun run to raise awareness of the cure for rabies. He collects about $200 in donations, and makes a check out to "science" which he then gives to a "nurse", who is really a *woman of the night* in a nurse costume. But the whole episode satirizes the idea, and it makes a good argument.

I suppose it depends on the what they are trying to make people aware of? Did you know that 20 Million people die of diabetes and every year 1 million more are diagnosed. It's the 6th largest killer in the US. Did you know that Type 2 Diabetes can be prevented? See bluesparrowmedical.com
This makes sense because the awareness is part of the solution. Whereas if a charity is raising awareness and not doing anything about it, then that is a waste.

These charities are like commercials to get people to do something or to donate to charities that will actually help. Interestingly enough, Tuberculosis kills more youth and adults than any other infectious disease in the world today. TB kills 2 to 3 million people each year but why do you never hear anything about this? Maybe if we had more groups raising the awareness of others then we can reduce the death toll of a curable disease.

If a "charity" is doing nothing else than to serve a political/mouthpiece purpose than yes. Some charities - Battered women - support women and children through dangerous times and raise awareness. I can't get behind something posing as a charity.

No.
Take autism, for example. Autism Speaks originally started as a campaign to raise awareness, and now autism has become a major issue.

It usually means they can pocket all the funds themselves.
Because the 'results' will be very hard to quantify.
Almost anything they do can be said to raise awareness.
Such as drive around in a sports-car with their logo/cause.

Yes, actully it does to me. I mean why have that as your goal? That would probuly just make people not want to give to it.
