Yes. When you turn your computer on, it will show a black screen with "HP" on it. On the bottom of the screen, press the BIOS key (Boot order, setup) From there, you can select book from a CD or a external drive. i.e. - Flash Drive with bootable OS.

you can, but you won't be able to do anything. the Hard drive stores the Operating system (usually Windows) and all of your programs. But, you can turn it on and go into the bios settings and load DOS capable CD's! thats all!

Hi. Only if you boot from a CD-ROM, but hard drives are pretty inexpensive now.

No you need a harddisk to start your operating system. A harddisk costs rather cheap nowadays.
