You obviously are a very Senior Citizen and are talking about the Britain of 50-60 years ago. I can take you to some Restaurants in London where you would eat the plate the food is so delicious. Home cooking has also improved over the past couple of decades.

Lol Spice is what you need to make bad food taste good.

When you have a prime piece of Steak you don't want to ruin the flavour with all that junk.

The funniest cooking I have ever seen was a Chinese guy try to cook a Traditional english sunday roast......

And what examples do you give of your experience of British food?

I would agree it is hard to think of British dishes which capture the imagination, in comparison with more "exotic" national cuisines. Nations typically make use of local produce in their dishes, hence the lack of spices you bemoan. But there is no shortage of herbs to embellish a dish, maybe you just visited poor quality chain pubs rather than good restaurants.

So write a recipe book & make a fortune.... its a matter of personal taste I guess. I like the taste & variety of real food without it being covered in spices & sauces. Each to his own eh?

some British foodstuff is effective - which includes your occasion of bread and butter pudding - it is heavily yummy! and you are able to no longer beat an exceedingly good roast beef dinner with Yorkshire puds. although, some is exceedingly undesirable. which includes haggis. i like haggis, no count if that's a effective one, yet particularly, the contents? Yuk! Turnips? I as quickly as knew somebody from New Zealand and that they have got been surprised we ate them - they feed them to livestock. are not getting me started on porridge oats! (i be attentive to I certainly have long previous on approximately ordinarily Scottish issues, i'm from Scotland!). although, little doubt different international places have thier dishes which do no longer look all that palateable to us Brits. many international locations do have thier version of porridge, case in point, others consume issues like tripe. a majority of those are alongside the greater 'nicer' dishes. and lots international places have foodstuff that are basically as calorie-crammed and hearty as some British dishes. although, on the grand scheme of issues, i might usually quite consume foodstuff from the different united states different than for British!

You're mistaking English food for the imported franchised American junk you find on every high street.

Next time you're around try going to a place that says "Restaurant" without a big yellow "M" above it. You could also try making some English friends and let them cook for you - although that doesn't seem likely.

Weasel i totally agree with you. I used to enjoy a biscuit, packet of crisps or a slice of cake. It doesn't taste the same anymore. Mind you, i do make a lovely roast on a Sunday or go to a cafe 5mins from us, who does a lovely full english breakfast only buying from a local farm.
