First, find out what is available at the local shops or the internet sites where you plan to buy. Personally, I would stick to a known brand even if you are not going to ride a lot - they last much longer than the no-name boards.

Most people prefer Ride, Burton, K2, Rossi, etc but any good name brand board will work. Go to their web site and look at what each model is designed for and what the recommended weight range for each particular length is.

If you are a beginner and are height / weight proportional, you should be looking for a board that is fairly flexible and matches your weight and usually as tall as your chin to nose - although that is just a rough guideline. Lighter, get a shorter board and heavier a longer board.

You should be able to find a last year's model - especially if you are looking for a women's board. Do you have a Sports Authority near you? You should normally be able to find a good beginner board for $150 to $200

Good Luck!
