I want to make arm warmers and fingerless gloves in knit or crochet, but I don't know how to make thumbholes. I want to make a tube sort of thing that goes about halfway up the thumb or just a hole. Thanks for your help!

A long time ago I made my own pattern for mittens for my kids. When I got to the thumb part, instead of single or double crochet stitch, I did a free chain of a few stitches then skipped the same # before attatching back to the mitten. So the pattern may look like this:
sc in ch, ch8, sk 8 sc in next to end of row...
(the next row would be to sc in each ch to continue the pattern, and make the opening a little sturdier)

The easiest way is to leave a thumb slit. It's vertical. If the item was knit or crocheted flat, you'd seam the arm, leave a bit open for the thumb and then seam the last inch or so again.

When I'm knitting such things, I begin with the lower edge and knit back and forth for several inches and continue knitting in-the-round after the thumb area. I only have an inch or so to seam to finish later.
